EPA seeking commentary on new label design

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently considering redesigning its Environment Safer Product Label, and is asking the public for suggestions and commentary on the best strategy. According to the agency, the Design for the Environment Safer Product Label is meant to help consumers better understand that products awarded the label meet their standards for safety for both consumers and the environment.

"We want consumers to be able to easily find safer products that work well," said Jim Jones, assistant administrator for Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention, in a release to the press. "The agency wants to hear from the American people on which designs will help people identify household cleaning and other products that are safer for families and the environment."

The label's design should help families make more informed choices about the chemicals they bring into their homes and expose their family to. The agency requests that a wide range of stakeholders provide their suggestions, from representatives of the manufacturing industry to consumers looking to make more informed purchasing decisions.

According to the EPA, in the 15 years since the program's introduction, over 2,500 products have been awarded the agency's seal of approval on their packaging labels.
