The New York Times reports that this is part of an effort to capture the sense of patriotism that will sweep the country this summer— especially on Memorial Day, the Fourth of July. The promotion is expected to end shortly after Election Day in November.

As part of this rebranding, the “King of Beers” tagline will be replaced with “E Pluribus Unum.” Though the new cans will not necessarily be red, white and blue, they will be inscribed with the words to the “Star Spangled Banner.”

Given that Anheuser-Busch was sold to the Belgian company InBev in 2008, some analysts see this as a move to reassert the brand’s long association with the United States. It’s a bold move, and you can bet that the company’s marketing department didn’t come up with the idea overnight.
