Canada must adhere to GHS labeling standards

GHS labeling requirements are designed to keep all companies involved in the manufacturing, transportation and overall distribution of dangerous chemical safe. With federal standards changing in the United States, it is essential for all businesses to keep themselves up-to-date.

As Canada often conducts business with the U.S., it is also necessary for for their organizations to remain current on all GHS labeling standards. According to a Health Canada press release, the organization will be launching a consultation process that begins the process of applying GHS labeling to workplace chemicals in the country.

“For workers, applying the GHS would make it easier to understand and reduce their exposure to hazardous materials in the workplace,” Minister of Health Leona Aglukkaq told the news source. “For employers, it would mean a safer workplace and simpler rules for compliance.”

Aglukkaq added that would also reduce barriers for producers to sell their items in Canada, the United States and other countries where GHS labeling is required.

Recently, Health Canada and the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) signed a memorandum of understanding. This allows the two organizations to collaborate and ensure that GHS implementation runs smoothly for both countries.

Even though various locations might have different uses for specific chemicals, it is important that all employees understand how to use them safely. That is where GHS labeling comes into play. With one set standard of descriptions, images and warning labels, organizations across the globe can keep their workers and customers safe.
